Idaho is one of only four states that charge sales tax on food – the tax rate being the same as all other products.
For the last several years, there has been attempts to repeal this tax by our legislature. In 2017 a bill was passed with a super majority vote by the Idaho Legislature to repeal the tax on food, but the Governor at the time vetoed the bill. Other proposed bills have since been written by legislators, however; they never receive a necessary committee hearing, therefore; they never turn into an active bill.
A very recent poll conducted by the Rassmussen Group for the Mountain States Policy Center revealed that 87% of Idahoans are in favor of repealing the tax on food, commonly known as “The Grocery Tax.”
Now, we as Idahoans can make this tax go away through the process of a ballot Initiative. With the necessary signatures on an official petition this matter can be put on the 2026 general election ballot for the citizens to decide.
This is not a partisan issue, but an all-out grassroots effort to make the repeal of the tax on food a reality.
